What Is Included in a Pediatric Physical Exam?

Get your child’s physicals done in Rockville, MD with the help of Dr. Errol Douglas and Gold Pediatrics.

What Happens During Your Child’s Physicals?

Regular physicals will allow our pediatrician to keep close tabs on your child’s development. If something’s amiss, those physicals will highlight it immediately.

But what actually happens during those well-child visits?

During a typical appointment, our pediatrician will assess your child’s physical condition by conducting some exams and taking measurements. They will run the exams necessary to ascertain your child’s vitals. Our pediatrician will also examine your child’s eyesight and hearing.

Some of these physical exams will also gauge your child’s reflexes, strength, and flexibility. Our pediatrician will also observe their posture and note if it’s proper for their age.

Mention any unusual things you’ve noticed about your child during this visit. After hearing your observations, the pediatrician may decide to screen your child for certain conditions. Hopefully, those screenings won’t return any concerning results, and your child will receive a clean bill of health.

At some point during this visit to our pediatrician, they will examine your child’s height and weight. Those measurements will let the pediatrician know if your child is overweight or obese.

It’s important to know about these things early so they can be addressed before they become serious problems. Our pediatrician can provide diet advice that you and your child follow. They can also recommend exercises suitable for your child’s current condition.

Has your child been dealing with sleep issues recently? If so, bring them up during your appointment with our pediatrician. The pediatrician can offer treatment for those issues so your child’s development is not impacted.

How Often Should Your Child Undergo Physical Examinations?

The physicals we just described are crucial for monitoring a child’s development. How often will you need to schedule them for your child to ensure their development is properly monitored?

The first visit should be scheduled no more than five days after your child’s birth. A follow-up appointment should be set two weeks later.

From there, you want to schedule well-child visits for your baby’s first month, second month, fourth month, sixth month, ninth month, and a date close to their first birthday. Well-child visits should take place every three months from your child’s first birthday to their second. You can then wait six months each for their subsequent two visits.

After their third birthday, your child will only have to return for yearly appointments. Set your child’s physicals in Rockville, MD by calling (301) 517-9710 and enlisting the help of Dr. Douglas and Gold Pediatrics.
